How Is a Commercial Cleaning Robot Different From a Home Robot Vacuum?

Search for a cleaning robot and home robot vacuums come up first. A commercial cleaning robot that cleans building floors does different work and is chosen by different criteria. This post sets out the differences and the criteria that decide whether one suits your building.

A home robot vacuums up dust. A commercial robot scrubs with water and recovers the dirty water. The work is different, so the criteria for choosing one are different too.

Search for "cleaning robot" and home robot vacuums come up first. That is why people looking for a robot to take over the floors of a shop, hospital or hotel are confused at first. The two have similar names but are different machines.

1. How does the work differ?

A home robot vacuums dust, and a commercial robot cleans with water.

Home robot vacuumCommercial cleaning robot (autonomous scrubber)
Main workSucks up dust and hair, light moppingSprays water, scrubs with a brush and recovers dirty water

OperationRuns automatically when no one is homeOperating hours and routes are set and repeated

The core of a commercial machine is that it sucks up the dirty water so none is left on the floor after cleaning. It is used where people walk, so it has to prevent slipping.

2. How different are they in numbers?

These are the public specifications of the two LionsBot models we supply.

3. How do you decide whether one suits your building?

Before area, look at aisle width.

  • The narrowest aisle — If the space between shelves or columns is narrow, the smaller body comes first
  • Area to clean and time — How many ㎡ a day, and within how many hours it has to be done
  • Floor material — Whether the floor is hard, or carpet or mat areas are mixed in
  • Water fill-and-drain spot — Whether a place to fill and empty water is close to the cleaning area
  • Operating hours — When the fewest visitors are present

How to measure these five on site is covered in What Should You Check on Site Before Adopting a Cleaning Robot?

4. Does it replace human cleaning?

It does not replace all of it. What the robot takes on is cleaning wide floors repeatedly. People still do the work that needs hands, such as corners, stairs, restrooms, glass and trash collection.

So the benefit of adoption often shows up not as "we cut cleaning staff" but as "the time spent cleaning wide floors goes to other work." If you write down how many hours your current staff spend on each task, you can see what to hand over to the robot.

Frequently asked questions

Can't I just put several home robot vacuums in?

The floor material and the way of cleaning are different. Home models are not built on the assumption of water scrubbing and dirty water recovery, and they are not designed to repeatedly clean thousands of ㎡.

Can I use it by rental?

The way of adopting depends on the organization's situation, and we explain it in the consultation. The appliance rentals that show up in search are for home use, so the terms are different.

How loud is it?

Both models average around 70dB. It is good to plan to run it during hours when few visitors are present.

Can I find out how much it will actually clean in my building?

The spec sheet numbers are maximum or average values. They drop when the aisles are complicated, so we calculate the actual area after looking at site conditions.

Next step

Tell us the narrowest aisle width, the area to be cleaned and the daily operating hours, and we will narrow down which model fits. If you have a photo of the water fill-and-drain spot, please send it too.
