How Is a CCTV System Different from an AI Patrol Robot?

CCTV is equipment that films a fixed spot and stores the footage. An AI patrol robot patrols, takes photos, and picks out the situations staff should check first. It is not a choice between the two, but a question of what people watch and what they receive as alerts.

"We have CCTV. Why a patrol robot too?" Recording footage vs. selecting and alerting. Nursing home safety thumbnail with the question and a diagram.

CCTV is equipment that films a fixed spot and keeps the footage. An AI patrol robot is a system that patrols, takes photos, and picks out the situations staff should check first. So instead of asking "what should we replace?", it is better to divide up "what do people watch, and what do we receive as alerts?"

The AI patrol robot features below describe only what our nursing home fall alert AI robot solution provides today.

How do the two work?

Once installed, CCTV keeps filming that spot and keeps a record. But at night it is hard for a small number of staff to keep watching many screens, and it is often used to look back through recordings after something has happened.

With an AI patrol robot, instead of people going through every photo taken, we operate around the events that need checking.

What does an AI patrol robot alert you to?

It currently provides three kinds of alerts.

  1. Fall candidate — It finds people in the photos taken during patrol, and if a person is lying or slumped on the floor rather than on a bed or chair, it reports a fall candidate.
  2. Alert when a person is found in a designated time slot and place — When a person is found in a time slot and place set at installation to match the customer's request (within the area the robot patrols), it is reported as something for staff to check. It can be adjusted if needed.
  3. Patrol gap — If the previous night's patrol photos were fewer than usual or missing, managers are told the next morning.

When an event is determined, it can be operated so that a mobile alert and information for checking the event are sent to registered managers.

What does an AI patrol robot not do?

It makes no medical diagnosis.

  • It only reports fall candidates; it does not judge the cause or any illness.
  • It cannot check places the robot does not patrol.

It should not be seen as equipment that replaces CCTV by recording and storing every scene. The roles are different.

Can they be used together?

The setup can be mixed. Our solution can adjust the sensor setup, such as the robot and fixed cameras, according to the facility's network and operating policy.

Here is one way to think about dividing the work.

  • Places that need continuous recording — places already recorded by CCTV, such as entrances and common areas
  • Places where someone has to make rounds at night — places with a heavy patrol burden, such as corridors spanning several floors or buildings
  • Who receives alerts, and in what order — who goes to check when an alert comes in

Without the last item, any equipment is less effective.

How do alerts arrive?

When a suspected fall is detected, a mobile notification (KakaoTalk notification, or Alimtalk) is sent to the registered staff member. The delivery time to the staff member once detected is within 30 seconds. AI judgment is an aid and does not replace night staff's rounds.

What about video and personal information?

Set the standards before adoption. We work out the video retention period, viewing permissions, and how residents and guardians are informed together with you before the demo.

For both CCTV and AI patrol, the laws that apply to video handling can differ by type of institution, so we recommend that you check the installation and operating standards with your institution's responsible department.

Frequently asked questions

We already have CCTV. Do we need an AI patrol robot?

The roles are different. CCTV records fixed spots, while an AI patrol robot patrols and alerts you to fall candidates, people found in designated time slots and places, and patrol gaps. Start by looking at whether there are areas where the night patrol burden is heavy.

Does an AI patrol robot replace CCTV recording?

No. It is a system operated around events that need checking, and its purpose differs from equipment that records and stores every scene.

Can we know when a resident comes out into the corridor at night?

When a person is found in a designated time slot and place (set at installation to match the customer's request, and adjustable if needed), it is reported as something for staff to check. The delivery time to the staff member once detected is within 30 seconds.

Does it also make medical diagnoses?

No. It is a facility safety monitoring system that detects candidates for abnormal situations to help staff check and respond.

Next step

Where to split the work between the CCTV you already have and a patrol robot depends on the facility's layout. Check the scope of what is provided on the solution page, and you can see how alerts arrive first in a 30-minute remote demo. The scope and conditions for the patrol robot side are summarized in one table on the nursing home fall alert AI robot page.
